MorningStar Birth Center is created for the following purpose:
To Provide and operate a Non-profit women's health and birth center for charitable purposes,
which provides cost effective, safe professional midwifery and women's health services in a
homelike, Christian environment primarily to women who want to be actively involved in the birth
of children.
This can be accomplished with the start of a free-standing birth center that focuses on the needs
of the homebirth population, primarily but Not exclusively, the Amish / Mennonite communities
that are in and around Coshocton County.
The only licensed free-standing birth center in the state of Ohio is Mt. Eaton in Wayne County about
45 miles to the north of coshocton. It is currently a doctor-run facility that does approximately 350
births/year and is exclusively Amish . The start of another free-standing birth center that is NOT
exclusive, allows for low risk pregnant women to make a choice to deliver their babies in a home-like
environment. A Certified Nurse Midwife (CNM) and a trained medical staff of nurses and aides will
provide appropriate care and work collaboratively with the local medical community to ensure the
safety of their clients. While Coshocton County may not have the largest population of
Amish/Mennonite in the state, it is central to many of the scattered outlaying communities including
those in Muskingum, Licking, Guernsey, and Tuscarawas. Also, by allowing other people with a
homebirth philosophy to receive the same care at this facility, it would draw many people from East
Central and Southern Ohio to Coshocton County and with it bring money for other service related
business such as restaurants, hotels, gas, etc. Coshocton County Memorial Hospital stands to
benefit as well since a set of guidelines will be established to maintain the low risk status of the
patients. Any patients that exhibit risk factors will be referred and transported to the hospital
immediately where they may continue their care a CNM that has hospital privileges, or the attending
obstetrician as it become appropriate. In this manner, MorningStar Birth Center does not seek to
become competition with the local hospital, but by drawing people from other areas of the state,
increase the number of births per year in Coshocton County. Another benefit is the creation of more
health care related jobs in the county. Initially, all staff, including administration and secretarial
work, would be part-time or on-call, but as MorningStar grows it will be able to extend to more
regularly schedule hours and benefits. To start this new business will require a part-time clinic nurse,
two part-time medical receptionists/accounting staff, at least seven on-call nurses
(OB experienced LPN's or RN's) and eight-ten Birth Center Aides (STNA training preferred). This
translates into 18-20 new jobs for Coshocton County while providing a rewarding career as we
touch people's lives during one of the most memorable events of Life...Birth!
